Approach the area of the Forum in Pompei and one of the first things you’ll see is the public fountain. This imposing feature, with the great wellhead behind, is situated at a fork in the road between Vicolo di Narciso and the Via Consolare and was begun in the 2nd Century BC. The huge well shaft is 3 x 4 metres and believed to be around 30 metres deep. The fountain was fed by an aqueduct and the well was a key factor of the intended industrial development of this part of the city.
