The Porta Venezia, which at one time was known as ‘Porta Orientale’ or the ‘Eastern Gate’ is set into the city walls. The two buildings were made to a design by Rodolfo Vantini from 1827 to 1828, following a competition launched to replace Piermarini’s work that had been left unfinished. The square shaped buildings have two loggias with the design incorporating the work which had already begun turning Piermarini’s fortified gates into administrative buildings. Facing in the direction of Vienna, the monument would later lose significance when Napoleon took command and built the Arch of Peace.
