Pognana Lario extends from the shores of Lake Como to Monte Preāla. The village, once known for its quarries of Moltrasina stone, is now a tourist destination. The upper part is called Castello as it was fortified in the Middle Ages. The mule-track from Pognana goes up the Colma della Guardia where there is a deep crevice in the rock called the buco di Premen. There are many unexpored caves in the area which is divided by the valley of Rovasco. Localities include Canzaga, Oréa, Rovasca and Quarzano and ancients graves indicate the place was inhabited in Roman times.
