The Piazza dei Cavalieri was once known as the ‘square of the seven roads’ and was originally a Roman forum. By the 16th Century this feature was completely changed by Cosimo I de’ Medici, who gifted a seat to the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephan (who fought against the Saracens) which he founded in 1561. In front of Palazzo della Carovana there is a statue of Cosimo made in 1596 by the sculptor, Francavilla from Florence, who followed the drawings made by Giambologna.
