The Parco Marinai d’Italia was set up in 1969 in the old vegetable and fruit market area. In its grounds of over 70,000 square metres there are several different kinds of trees including horse chestnut, elm, birch and maple. The park also has a fine fountain and a monument dedicated to Italian sailors - a creation of sculptor Francesco Somaini. The Liberty square, which was the former old market square, was renovated and has been re-opened to the public as a centre for classical music concerts.
