Close to the basilica and facing onto the square stands the very fine Palazzo Comunale which was partly rebuilt after the earthquake of 1859. It has a 14th Century doorway which was once topped by a loggia in 1876, but this was later closed up. A contemporary stairway leads up to it. The portico was built in 1492 and the tall bell tower dates from the 18th Century. A 1450 silver reliquary is kept in the Cappella dei Priori of the palazzo.
