The Palatina library was founded by Philip Bourbon in 1761 and was opened to the public in 1769. It was later enlarged through donations and some acquisitions, including from Fondo Orientale De Rossi, the private library of the Dukes of Bourbon in Parma and the Ortalli print collection. Originally holding some 40,000 volumes, it now houses in excess of 700.000 volumes, including 3,000 early printed works, 6,600 manuscripts, and 59,000 prints dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Spread over three rooms known as the Sala dei Maria Luigia, the Sala Dante and the Galleria del Petitot.
