Muro Leccese is located in the Salento inland, south of Lecce. The Greeks settled here between the 9th and the 7th centuries BC. Some of the ancient Messapian town walls built in the 8th and 7th century BC are still visible and quite well preserved, although the stone was used for the medieval buildings here. In the 1980s, archaeologists excavated the Northern Door and some graves; findings included chinaware and inscriptions in the Messapian language and these are kept in the province Museum of Lecce.
