The Mura Messapiche Archeological Park covers the territory of Manduria, an ancient flourishing Messapian centre. The Pliniano Fountain, the monument symbol of Manduria depicted in the city coat of arms, is mentioned by Plinius the Old because of its continuous water supply to the area. The whole region has traces of ancient human settlements dating back as far as the 6th Century BC and has the small church of St. Peter of Manduria set inside it. The necropolis is located outside the walls and is the largest in the whole region with 1284 tombs dating from the 6th Century BC.
