The Municipal Theatre was erected in 1838, when the Community of Modena built a modern theatre to fulfil the needs of the city and to improve its standing in people’s eyes. Its design and construction was entrusted to the Ducal architect Francesco Vandelli who also designed ‘Foro Boario’ and the church of ‘S.Giovanni del Cantone’. The theatre is of a horseshoe plan auditorium with four boxes, gallery and a richly decorated ceiling; it opened on the 3rd October 1841.
