The Monumental Graveyard (Campo Santo) in Pisa was built be Giovanni di Simone at the end of the 13th Century. The magnificent Romanesque rectangular creation has many works of art including Roman sarcophagi, epigraphs, sculptures and frescoes of a number of well-known artists like Bonaiuti and Veneziano. The Graveyard suffered heavy damaged during the bombings of WWII but during the renovation works important findings were unearthed, and these are now on display at the Sinopias Museum. Legend has it that this was the ancient graveyard containing the ‘Holy Ground’ brought back by the Crusaders from Palestine, in 1200.
