The Monumental Cemetery was built to a design by F. Lardoni and A. Arienti. It was consecrated in 1849 by Bishop G. Pecci, who later became Pope Leo XII. There are some remarkable monuments and chapels of important Perugian families here, giving visitors an insight into the sculptures and architecture of Perugia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the monuments are: pyramids, rotundas, sarcophagi, and ornate family mausoleums as well as underground tomb galleries.
