Monte Sant’Elia covers an area about 400 metres above sea level on the southern side of the Eastern Murge. It dominates the Gulf of Taranto along with the Pollino massif and both can be seen from this protected area. The whole area is almost entirely covered with the Caracciolo wood which stretches from Mottola to Martina Franca. Monte Sant’Elia is part of a huge estate that includes a few communities, such as the traditional stone dwellings with a conical roof known as Trulli that date back to the 17th Century.
