Monopoli Castle is surrounded on three sides by the sea and has been much modified over the centuries. The castle, as it’s seen today, is from the mid 17th Century when the present entrance was added and it was turned from a defensive structure, complete with splayed cannon openings, into a mansion. At the beginning of the 1900s it was used as a gaol and in 1976 it was again renovated and became the town’s Archaeological Museum.
