Maurizio’s tower can be found on the corner of Orvieto’s Piazza del Duomo. The date of this structure is the 14th Century and it was built by order of Opera del Duomo. It houses what is said to have been the first mechanical clock in Europe, made by a master clock maker of Orvieto. The mechanism was accomplished with some 285 pounds of iron. On the top was placed a bronze device to mark the hours, and it chimes on the quarter.
