The small town of Martignano is one of the places where an ancient dialect of Greek origin is still spoken. It is well worth a visit if only to see the underground olive press which has been preserved for centuries. This is located in the Palazzo Calmieri in a wide room with a barrel vault. The simple building is today the seat of a cultural centre but was once used as a gaol, a warehouse and a stockroom for oil.
