The village of Martano is situated inside the Greek part of Salento. It has two important monuments: the Palazzo Baronale, which was once an Aragonese stronghold but which became a residence from the first half of the 16th Century. The palace retains one of the three corner towers and a 17th Century flight of steps. The other monument is the Mother Church, which dates to the late 16th Century. The first settlement around Martano dates back to the Neolithic age, as is evident from Teofilo’s Menhir.
