The Marina Gate (Porta Marina) is the entrance into Pompei that most visitors use – being just a short stroll from the railway station. Prior to the city being buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, this would have been quite close to the sea, hence its name. The gate has two entrance points, one for pedestrians and the other for carriages and carts. Originally it would have been decorated. Through this passageway you will find the roadway of great polygonal blocks of stone.
