Le Gravine Settlements

These ravines are rocky gorges carved by watercourses that have their sources on the Murge plateau and flow down to the sea. Because of the special microclimate and the stable temperature in the ravine, the caves here were used as human settlements from the Neolithic Age to the 1950s. These curious villages can be found in many places like Ginosa, Mottola, Grottaglie, Crispiano and Massacra and sometimes in part of an urban area. The best preserved examples of rock paintings and architecture of these shrines, directly carved in the rock, are in Mottola and Massafra
