This very grand building was erected on the orders of Charles III of Bourbon and the piazza in front is dedicated to him. The purpose of the house was to accommodate the poor people of the whole kingdom and the inscription above the door bears this out. Building began in 1751 and the design was by architect, Ferdinando Fuga who chose a Baroque style. Originally it was to have been an even larger structure but was never finished. Used for its intended purpose, it was later taken over by the social services.
