The Forum in Pompei can be found in the centre of town and was the heart of Pompeian social, commercial, and political life. It had been damaged by an earthquake 16 years before Mount Vesuvius erupted and left un-repaired. Remains of the travertine marble paving remain and would once have covered the whole area. Originally, the pedestals here supported bronze or marble statues, but most of these were removed from the Forum in the century following Pompei’s destruction.
