Peschiera del Garda occupied an important strategic position in defence of the Lake Garda area from the days of the Roman Empire. In medieval times the Scaligers of Verona built this ancient military fortress, with its walls and battlements, which rose above the water in the form of a pentagon and protected the historic centre, playing an important role in Italian history. Today, the bastions and lanes of the old complex are home to shops, restaurants and hotels. In August, Peschiera del Garda plays hosts to the ‘Palio delle Mura’, where boats compete on the moat along the town walls.
