This magnificent fountain dates to 1277-78 and has been recently restored. It was designed by Fra Bevignate and decorated with sculptures and bas-reliefs by Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni. It is both a beautiful architectural creation and a complex feat of hydraulic engineering. It was thanks to the engineer Boninsegna de Venezia that waters from a new aqueduct from Monte Pacciano converge here. The fountain is built on three levels; two polygonal basins in marble, one above the other with 25 and 24 sides respectively and a third basin in bronze.
