The Baroque Fontana di Monteoliveto is one of the most beautiful fountains in Naples, built in 1669 for Don Pedro de Aragona to the design of the architect Cosimo Fanzago. It is named after the Olivetano monks, although it was originally intended that it be named after Charles II of Hapsburg. The fountain was a donation to the city to represent the strength and splendour of the ruling authority. It’s built in white marble with a wide basin on which are figures of lions and eagles. Standing over them is the bronze statue of Charles II as a young man.
