This example of ancient engineering can be found in the basement of Palazzo Bourbon-Sorbello, next to the cathedral. A monumental 116ft deep well and cistern; it was at one time capable of providing the whole of the city with water. The bottom of the well is accessible to visitors and is partly covered in great blocks of travertine, which was also used for the well’s original cover. The furrows left by the ropes which the Etruscans used to pull up buckets of water, can still be seen.
