Pisa’s cathedral, situated in the ‘square of the miracles’, was built between the 11th and the 12th Century. The incredible Romanesque exterior has tiers of arches and columns and is adorned with statues. The cathedral is entered by magnificent bronze doors, beautifully decorated with biblical scenes. Inside is sumptuous with white and black marble and gilded ceilings. The interior was badly damaged by fire in 1595, but retains the radiant mosaic of Christ in the apse above the high altar. There are important paintings by Giambologna, Andrea del Sarto, and others and the 14th Century pulpit by Giovanni Pisano is impressive.
