Convento del Sacro Speco

About 8 miles southeast of Narni a little way beyond Atrocanto, you will find the Convento del Sacro Speco. The church and cloisters here were founded in 1213 by Saint Francis. The saint often spent time in a cave near here in order to pray. There is a story attached to the place whereby he once took ill here and was visited by an angel who invoked beautiful violin music to soothe him. The whole place has a rather mystical feel about it and guided tours are available to visitors.
