The Collegio di Brera was once the seat of the Jesuit College. It was commissioned in 1571 by Martino Bassi and continued by Francesco Maria Richini in 1615. There have been several extensions of the building, but it still maintains the style of Richini’s original design. It is centred on a courtyard that consists of a double order and a double staircase opposite the entrance. The façade is Lombard Baroque style with a portal designed in the 18th Century by Piermarini. Today it is home to the Brera art gallery, Braidense national library, Fine Arts Academy and the astronomical observatory.
