Designed by Leopold Pollak in 1790 in a romantic style, the building now houses an important collection of modern art. The huge collection of paintings and sculptures are from 19th Century Italian artists and include Canova, Hayez, Cremona, Medardo, Rosso, Ranzoni and Segantini. On display on the first floor is the famous ‘Il Quarto Stato’ by Pellizza da Volpedo. The Gallery also has the Giuseppe Vismara Collection, with works by Carrà, Morandi, Modigliani, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and other famous artists. There is an important collection dedicated solely to the sculptor Marino Marini.
