Alessandro Farnese commissioned the Citadel from an idea by Pier Luigi Farnese in 1546. It is a very imposing structure, which began life in 1591 and is in the southern part of the city. With pentagonal shaped bulwark and five bastions, it was once surrounded by a moat. It is now a public park covering some 11 hectares or more and is entered through a magnificent marble portal capped with a large coat of arms. It is open from April to September. Keywords
