The Church of St. Augustine was built in 1338 on the foundations of an earlier construction, but was completely changed in 1663 by a commission from the Duchess Laura Martinozzi. This was in honour of her husband and to destine it as cemetery and pantheon for the Estense family. Underneath the right-hand choir is a fresco from the old church depicting the Madonna of Consolation with Child attributed to Tommaso da Modena. The interior is richly adorned with stuccos, statues, busts and bas-reliefs honouring the house of d’Este with a magnificent coffered ceiling.
