The beautifully ornate church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa was built in the 13th Century on the bank of the Arno River. To protect it, this masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic was actually dismantled in 1871 and rebuilt further away from the water’s edge. The exterior is a marvel of triple and four lancet windows, wonderful porticos, pinnacles and spires while the interior design includes some priceless work by the sculptor, Pisano.
