The Church of San Paolo Maggiore was erected sometime between the 8th and 9th centuries on the former site of the Temple of the Dioscurans. However, of the original structure there remain only two columns behind the facade, and nothing is left of the medieval structure after the Teatini rebuilt it at the end of the 16th Century. Many artists who were in Naples at the time, left their mark on the interior of the church during the 17th and 18th centuries, much of which can still be seen.
