The Church of San Francesco is a 19th Century creation of the architect Gaetano Cima and incorporates the remains of a much older building. Inside this substantial domed church is the named Crocifisso di Nicodemo, sited in the Neo-classical marble altar that was carved by an unknown Catalan. The crucifix is the most precious and significant wooden sculpture on the whole of the island. This is a very moving carving of an emaciated, sunken-eyed Christ, with his skin scored by cuts and abrasions.
