The Cathedral was built in 1099 on the site of an early Christian church and where the sepulchre of San Geminiano once stood. The body was solemnly carried to the cathedral on the 30th April 1106 in the presence of Countess Matilde di Canossa and consecrated by Pope Lucius III on the 12th July 1184. Designed by the architect Lanfranca, it is entirely covered with white marble and adorned with many sculptures. The façade is decorated with stories of Genesis created by Wiligelmo.
