The Cathedral was built on the site of an early Christian Basilica that dated back to the 6th Century. The Arabs later transformed it into a Mosque. However it was renovated and restored to Christian rites by the Normans under Roger the II, who altered it adding the chapel of the Incoronata to the north and a chapel of the Maddalena to the south. After the earthquake of 1169, Archbishop Gualtiero rebuilt the Cathedral; work started in 1170 and was completed under Frederick II, who wanted to be buried in the Cathedral.
