The Cathedral of Santa Maria Argentea was built in 1560 and modified after the earthquakes of 1703, 1730 and 1859. It is located next to the fortress and still has its original wooden doors in the main portal. One entrance, half hidden by the huge fortifications, comes from the Pieve of Santa Maria Argentea which was taken down to make room for the castle. The cathedral contains a fresco of the Madonna della Misericordia in the manner of Sparapane (16th Century). There’s a richly decorated altar by Duquesnoy, and work by Pomarancio and Giuseppe Paladini.
