Beneath the church of Santa Maria della Sanita are the San Gaudioso catacombs. Access can be gained from inside the church. The saint, who died between 451 and 452, was buried in the Sanità valley. The catacombs grew around his tomb, and around that of San Nostriano. The corridors and cubicles are still visible with remains of mosaics and raised frescoes from the 5th and 6th Century, showing Christian symbols and images of saints and the dead. The stone seats were used in the 17th Century for dissecting bodies before burial and possibly prior to being embedded in the walls.
