The castle in Maniace was built around the 13th Century. It can be entered by crossing a drawbridge which overlooks a sea water filled moat. The castle was built to a square plan with four corner keeps. There are four great fireplaces set in the north and south walls. Of particular note is the fine portal with marble decoration and artistic capitals which were sculptured in the calcareous stone of Syracuse by handicraftsmen who are believed to have come from Central Italy.
