The 14th Century Castle of Sant’Elmo was built on the summit of the Vomero hill and is visible from everywhere in the city. The structure underwent modifications over the centuries including a six-point star plan, surrounded by deep moats. In 1799 it was used as a defensive point and a prison for revolutionaries. Now the castle is used as a key venue for cultural events. It houses the offices of the Soprintendenza (cultural heritage administration) and a library, but visitors can see the underground prisons and enjoy the spectacular view of Naples from the terraces.
