The medieval fortress was built on the former site of a Franciscan convent dedicated to Santa Maria La Nova. The castle’s Palatine Chapel is a superb example of Gothic art from the Angevin period. A decorative marble triumphal arch forms the entrance and was erected in honour of King Alfonso V of Aragon. Inside the castle are sculptures and frescoes from the 14th and 15th Centuries, and in the eastern wing is the city’s Museo Civico – a gallery comprising local artwork from the 15th to 19th Centuries.
