The Royal Palace stands where once stood a rural hamlet and was built according to the wishes of Charles III of Bourbon. Work began in 1738, with the designs by Giovanni Antonio Medrano. The palace is a vast and impressive building with 3 large communicating courtyards, internally connected by porticos. Inside are Royal Apartments and long halls which are hung with paintings from the Bourbon, and Farnese collections. Sculptures and other decorative artworks are 18th and 19th Century.
