Naples’ Botanical Gardens are said to be among the finest in Italy. Created between 1807 and 1819 on the orders of Giuseppe Bonaparte, they cover an area of 12 hectares. Giuliano De Fazio was entrusted with the project and he resolved the dilemma of the different street levels by creating a double flight of steps. There are over 10,000 different plant species here including rare examples from America, Asia and Australia. Ponds with aquatic plants can be found among the large tree ferns and citrus groves and collections of tropical, succulent and carnivorous plants.
