The incredible looking building of the Milan Stock Exchange (Borsa di Milano) was erected in 1808, along similar lines to the Exchange of Amsterdam (1608). This led to the name of ‘Borsa’, in recognition of the Van der Burs, a family of bankers from Bruges. In 1901 Luigi Broggi and Luca Beltrami were selected to fashion a more suitable seat for commercial exchange in Piazza Cordusio, which soon became inadequate. In the 1930s, Paolo Mezzanotte created the present seat in Piazza Affari, which was much restored in the 1990s.
