The Basilica in Pompei is next to the Forum at the south west corner. It was built towards the end of the 2nd Century BC. The structure has Greek influence and was the most important public building in Pompei, being used also as a courthouse and chamber of commerce. The great brick columns would originally have been covered with plaster and painted. These columns divide the Basilica into 3 naves. This early Roman basilica plan became the general pattern for other early church buildings.
