The Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio is outside the medieval city walls, along the road that runs from the Pusteria to Porta Ticinese. Originally the area was not built up, but was agricultural land, and then it became home to the Dominicans and is now surrounded by a public park area. It was believed to have been built sometime between the 4th and 5th Century and still retains much of its Roman heritage due in part to an 11th Century restoration. Beyond the artificial crypt, a series of spaces lead to the Portinari chapel in Renaissance-Lombard style.
