The Museum of the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan is entered from the portico of the presbytery. In this small museum are sacred finds relevant to the Basilica including mosaics and church furnishings. It was established in 1949 to document the history of the Basilica and amongst its exhibits are the Medallion of St. Ambrose blessing, a number of 17th Century Flemish tapestries and the Saint’s bedstead. Also here is the gold and silver cross which St Charles Borromeo carried in 1576 in a thanksgiving procession to mark the end of the plague.
