Built outside the Roman city walls, it took most of its salvage materials from the nearby amphitheatre. Renovated many times from its origin in the 4th Century, it now has 4 towers and side chapels though mainly it’s of a 16th Century style, complete with dome. A huge Roman portal leads to the octagonal chapel of Sant’Aquilino with the tomb of St. Lorenzo and St. Ippolito. Legend says the chapel was built by Galla Placidia, and that she’s buried in the tomb near the entrance. Outside there is a statue of Constantine, who was made Emperor in 313.
