The Baptistery was designed by Diotisalvi in 1152 but it wasn’t completed until around a century later. Nicola Pisano who took on this great project, built it to the original circular plan and decorated it with many fine sculptures. The arches, fretted cusps and lancet windows are quite beautiful and the portal which faces the Duomo is ornamented with fine reliefs. Visitors who climb the steps in the Battistero from the gallery will be rewarded with a splendid view down onto the baptismal font, and from the upper floor – in the dome – a view over the Campo dei Miracoli.
