The Archiepiscopal Seminary of San Giovanni was established in 1565 by St. Charles. It followed the recommendation of the Council of Trent, on the site of the monastery of San Giovanni degli Umiliati. The Seminary has an impressive entrance arch which is supported by caryatids and topped by Cardinal Borromeo’s coat of arms. There is work here by Trezzi and Pellegrini’s - seen in the courtyard - and the two porticoes; one in Doric style and the other Ionic - with Palladian-like columns.
